A Thanksgiving Walk in the Woods

My brother came down to visit for Thanksgiving. To work off some of the thankful overeating, we headed off to the Cuyamaca mountains for a hike up one of my favorite local peaks.

A few years ago, fire came through the local mountains and hit Stonewall Peak. It left behind blackened and burned out trees in its wake. When snow falls, which is pretty rare at this altitude, the white of the snow contrasts magically with the charred black of the trunks and branches.

Lately, I’ve been playing around with other black and white toy cameras (like the Instagram and Lomo), but the Hipstamatic black and white has something special to it that the others don’t.

At the summit. Matt’s on the left. Me on the right.

And North Peak with Lake Cuyumaca in the foreground.
